Walgreens has a Register Rewards (RR) shoppers program (similar to CVS’s ECB program) and once you have completed your RR purchase you’ll receive a “Catalina” style coupon to use on your next purchase. (Catalina’s are coupons or vouchers that print at the cash register when you have a certain triggering transaction (s) and you’ll see such machines in grocery stores and Target as well).
Scan the weekly circular for transactions reflecting the Register Rewards or, better yet, make it easy on yourself and check savingyourcents.com here for the best Walgreens deals.
When you purchase certain items and/or a certain dollar amount of items, a coupon called a Register Reward will print out that is good on your next purchase at Walgreens. You can maximize your savings by combining a Register Rewards producing deal or a great sale price with a manufacturer’s coupon and possibly even a store coupon.
Walgreens store coupons are found in several different way but generally you always want to look for the monthly coupon booklets which are always by the front door along with the weekly flyers. There are also several different other Walgreens coupon booklets that are available at different times of the year – those are generally found by the pharmacy area such as a Diatebes booklet, etc. That said, Wlagreens even had coupons in a children’s coloring book at one point – so always be on the lookout in the store.
In a nutshell:
- Walgreens does not have a store loyalty card. This is great as that allows multiple transactions of the same item. (CVS’s similar program limits you on the number of transations on it’s ECB items).
- You will only earn RRs once per RR deal per transaction. If you want multiples of the same item and the RR’s, then purchase the items in separate transactions.
- RRs cannot be “rolled” on like transactions. You cannot use a RR earned on a particular product to buy something from that same manufacturer. It’s a pain and sometimes challenging as the manufacturer names are not even close to the product names. So note in small print on the RR what you received it for your future reference.
- Register Rewards are like money. However, when checking out, Walgreens treats them as manufacturer coupons. The problem with this is that Walgreens only allows you to use as many manufacturer coupons as items on the transaction. This creates a need for “filler items” if you have a coupon for every item you’re purchasing and wish to pay with a Register Reward. Filler items can be inexpensive items that you add to an order so you have a non-coupon item that will allow your Register Rewards to be processed. Such items can be inexpensive candies, seasonal pencils, votive candles, pocket Kleenex, etc. Keep in mind that the coupons in the flyers do not count as manufacturer coupons so you can use those items as fillers.
Register Rewards do expire, so pay attention to the expiration dates. Like cash, they can’t be replaced if lost. Also, it’s a “use it or lose it” situation – make sure that whatever you buy with it next will use up the entire RR to get the full value – no change is given.
