Wow!  The Houston Chronicle has lowered their Sunday newspaper subscription delivery to $.50 per paper!  If you live in the Houston area, I highly recommend getting multiple copies by calling 713-220-7211.  It really helps when stocking up.

The newstand price can range from $2 to $2.50 for just one copy!

Just a word of warning though – I had a lot of trouble in the beginning with the actual delivery of multiple copies.  For some reason, getting several papers each Sunday throws the delivery guy off.  So you may have to call the Chronicle’s subscription line several times to get it sorted out.  Once it’s setup, though, it shouldn’t be a problem.

    Hi Wisemom!

Am assuming you are subscribing to the Houston Chronicle. If so, call the manager Angie Heinenkamp (in subscriptions) at 713-220-7211. I tend to have a lot of issues with the regular service line people, so I keep her number to call when things get messd up. She seems on top of things.

I love the $.50 deal! Found it on one of the flyers in the Sunday paper right around when I posted it. It cut my subscription/coupon inserts cost in half and I already thought I had a pretty good deal at $1 each. I went ahead and paid for several months in advance to guaranty that I’d get the papers at that price.

    Good luck!

Do you think this deal is still going on? What do I need to say to them to get the discount on my subscription?

  • Cindy says:

Yes, I believe it’s still going on. Just call the subscription line and simply ask for the $.50 deal. That’s what I did. Also, it’s supposed to be for new subscribers, but they gave me the deal anyways even though I’ve been a subscriber for awhile.

  • Catherine says:

Wow! Thanks so much for this info! I just subscribed. Now I’ll save $1.50 / week for the newspaper!!

  • SarahF says:

Just got the newspaper deal! YAY!!! However, came across something annoying. Apparently when I signed up for a free subscription through my airline miles it expired over a month ago. I assumed they would just stop bringing the paper when it was up. Instead they added it to my “bill” but I NEVER got the bill. They claim they sent 4 bills but I never got a single one. Blah… so I gave in a paid the $15 balance just to be done with it, but then they gave me the 50 cent deal so I guess it worked out.

  • Cindy says:

I had the same thing happen to me. No bills were sent for several months! Not very impressed with the Chronicle’s service dept. Glad you still got the deal though!

  • SarahF says:

Thanks Cindy. Glad to know I’m not alone!

But I agree, YAY for the deal :-) Boo for the billing department. At least we’re set for this year at a rate we can handle no problem!

  • lee says:

They told me it is for new subscribers only. I must continue at my current rate. I called because I have been missing my smart source insert for the past 4 weeks. They not only refused to give me the lower price but have failed to correct the missing inserts as well. Not very pleased with them right now. Hopefully they will get things straight soon.

  • Cindy says:

Call Angie Heinenkamp at 713-362-3305. She’s a helpful manager in the service department. I have rec’d very poor service from the regular customer service agents as well. You should definitely be either credited back the money for those incomplete papers or given extra weeks.

Also, if you don’t get the $.50 rate, try try again! I’d suggest calling back until you receive someone more helpful. You could also call and cancel your current subscription after you receive the latest inserts and then resubscribe a few days later. I had no problem getting that great rate and had been a subscriber for awhile.

    Best of luck!

do you know if this deal is still going on? we have been a subscriber for over a year now and pay $1.00 a week. They told me I couln’t get more than one delivered..I would love to get two for the current price I pay now..

  • Cindy says:

I don’t know for sure if it is, but I’d suggest calling the Chronicle to see. If it is and they don’t give it to you then maybe try cancelling it and resubscribing at the lower price. Good luck!

  • Ken says:

I just called the subscription number and spoke with a general customer service agent. I put in a request for 10 Sunday papers at .50 each and he said that a manager would call me tomorrow to confirm the request. I have to pay in full for a year though to get the deal ($260). A 6 month option is no longer available. I basically said that I saw an ad (didn’t say where) for the .50 Sunday paper, and he asked me how many I wanted. Took my address and tele #. I’ll wait for the final call tomorrow and repost.

  • Cindy says:

Great! That’s a huge savings. Not sure why you have to pay for that much in advance though as I have never done that. Let me know how it works out!

  • Tammy says:

The deal is still alive!, the only problem is that you have to pay for the full year in advance to get the papers at .50 cents. I’ve decided to start couponing, so I got 4 papers, I’m so scared that I’m going to get overwhelmed by the whole thing, ‘m not the most organized person, but with this price I figured I would give it a try anyway.

  • Cindy says:

Awesome! Glad the deal is still on! Definitely keep on top of the coupons as it can get out of control. Suggestion is to not actually clip all the coupons each week, but keep them in their own separate file to access to (as referred to in the coupon matchups or as needed). I have a portable file box just for that and it works well. I also keep a smaller alphabetical file for printables, etc. that don’t come from the paper.
